Happy Spring!

Today is the Vernal Equinox.  For my Spring project, I'm planning on making a variation of this beautiful floral quilt.  The photo shown and the original design, entitled "Flower Farm", was found in Easy Quilt Projects by Better Homes and Gardens, #3812, published by Leisure Arts, Inc. (January 1, 2004)

I love the fabrics shown in the photo, but for this project I'm going to be using the Romantic Afternoon Flannel collection by Wilmington Prints, available on Fabric.com (samples shown below).  I've made a few modifications to the design:  First, instead of having a contrasting square at the center of each cross-shaped block (pink in the photo), I've made one of the stripes go all the way through, like something you might see in a Celtic design.  Secondly, my outer border is wider (6").  And of course, my colors will be different.  Beyond that, I'm applying one major change to the construction process:  I'm going to be using a Quilt-As-You-Go technique.  With this approach, you quilt each block separately, and then join them, and in that way you don't have to fit the whole quilt under your sewing machine all at once.

Here are the fabrics I'll be using:

I'll go into the construction details in a later post.  In the meantime, what creative project would you like to underdake this season?
